Significance	Dhanteras, also known as Dhanatrayodashi, is a Hindu festival that marks the beginning of Diwali celebrations. The word 'Dhan' means wealth and 'Teras' refers to the 13th day in the moon cycle. The festival is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity, and Lord Dhanvantari, the god of health and healing. It is believed that on this day, both of these deities came out of the ocean during the churning of the Milky Sea. Hence, Dhanteras holds special significance for wealth, prosperity, and health.
Story	The story behind Dhanteras is related to the son of King Hima. As per his horoscope, he was destined to die by snake-bite on the fourth day of his marriage. On that particular day, his wife did not allow him to sleep. She laid out all her ornaments and lots of gold coins in a heap at the entrance of their sleeping chamber and lit lamps all over the place. When Yama, the god of Death, arrived in the guise of a Serpent, his eyes were dazzled and blinded by the brilliance of the lamps and the jewelry. Yama could not enter the Prince's chamber, and he climbed on top of the heap of gold coins and sat there the entire night listening to the stories and songs. In the morning, he silently went away. Thus, the young prince was saved from the clutches of death. Since then, this day of Dhanteras came to be known as the day of "Yamadeepdaan" and lamps are kept burning throughout the night in reverential adoration to Yama, the god of Death.
How to Celebrate	Dhanteras is celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy. People clean their homes and decorate them with lights and rangolis. It is considered auspicious to buy gold, silver, or new utensils on this day. In the evening, families perform a Lakshmi Puja and sing devotional songs in honor of the goddess. After the puja, lamps are lit and kept burning throughout the night. Some people also worship Lord Dhanvantari, seeking his blessings for good health and well-being.
